Revisiting Volunteer Burnout

Back in December 2019, we wrote up a blog post titled “Burnout: Fighting the #1 Enemy of Volunteer Time.”

We did this, because at the time we had started receiving some concerning messages from individual and business members. They were tired. They were fed up. They wanted to quit giving back.

Each had their own personal reasons, but there were a few trends.

In response to those trends, we developed the acronym “L.E.A.N.” as a tool to help folks troubleshoot what was burning them out.

Within a few days, that blog post became the all-time most visited and shared page on the 2% website.

And then, COVID-19 hit.

Every small challenge grew exponentially, overnight.
Exhausted volunteers were asked to step up, more mightily than ever before.

In this, the 19th Episode of the The Average Conservationist Podcast, our Executive Director (Jared Frasier) hops on the line with host Marcus Ewing to revisit the topic - updated for the world as it is now, here at the end of 2020.

So much has changed since last winter, but the principles of “L.E.A.N.” not only remain - they’re even more necessary to ensure you are an effective volunteer for conservation (or anywhere else you give your energies).
